Technology-based Teaching: Article 7

Adding Teaching Materials to a Moodle LMS

In most of the asynchronous teaching platforms, online teaching takes place through the learning materials which are added to the course page. Learning materials can be classified to the following categories based on the content presentation techniques.

  • Text-based static materials
  • Text-based interactive materials
  • Multimedia-based static materials
  • Multimedia-based interactive materials

Text-based static materials

Text-based static materials are the primary content presentation technique which a teacher can prepare the teaching materials. These materials can have explanations, pictures, illustrations. There two methods which can be used to create these materials.

  • As a course note in pdf or word format using Moodle File activity.
  • Using a Moodle activity like Page or Book activities.

Text-based interactive materials

In these materials, the teacher can create interactive activities which expect user responses. These materials can be developed

  • Using Moodle Lesson activity.
  • Using external Moodle plugin like H5P.
  • Develop as an external web site and connect with Moodle.

Multimedia-based static materials

The teacher can prepare videos based on recorded lectures, animations or any other simulations. There’s no students’ interaction with the material but only play as a video.

Videos can be added to a Moodle course page;

  • uploaded using File activity
  • upload to YouTube and embed to the course using Page activity

Multimedia-based interactive materials

If the multimedia is combined with the students’ interaction in any learning materials, it can be included in this category. Technological competence is required to develop these materials. Special authoring software is necessary to create these materials. Most of the materials are published as SCORM packages and can be added to the Moodle using SCORM activity. However, different teaching techniques and assessments can be included in Multimedia-based interactive materials.
